History of the Canaan Dog in Canada
The Canaan Dog first came to Canada in May 16, 1970. The dogs came from a kennel in Delaware owned by Alan Goodman. Akiba
of Brandywood went to the Cramers in Winnipeg and Yael of Brandywood went to Mrs. Goldberg in Ontario.
It wasn't until the fall of 1971 that Suzan and Art Horovitch, owners of Southalta Kennels in Barnwell, Alberta, received their first Canaan Dog. Massada's Eve was sent by Mildred Perry from California. She whelped a litter of 5 puppies on September 8, 1972. The sire was Hadar of Massada.
This litter plus the other 4 Canaans in Canada (the fourth was Zayn of Massada) formed the basis for the original Canaan Club of Canada. The first executive was voted in on March 15, 1973. Art Horovitch was president, Herman Roehr was vice-president, and Suzan Horovitch was secretary and treasurer. Dwayne Hoard, Kurt Heller, Margery Goldberg, and Florence Hogarth were directors. Suzan Horovitch was appointed Studbook Guardian.
Massada's Eve was bred again, this time to Adam me Beth HaEmunah, the 1973 CCA National
Specialty Best of Breed Winner. She whelped Southalta's "B" litter of 6 puppies on May 6, 1974. From this litter came the 1981 CCA National Specialty Winner, Southalta's Beriah, the first
Canadian born Canaan Dog to win the title. Her son, Terramara Achad, followed in her pawprints 5 years later in winning the title. She was also the first Canaan Dog owned by Terry Bagley, of
Terramara Kennels in Cold Lake, Alberta.
With the efforts of Suzan and Art Horovitch, the the Canaan Dog was accepted into the Miscellaneous Class of the Canadian Kennel Club on December 1, 1975. The Canaan Dog was recognized under the "Working Group" in Canada in January 1993.
Other Canadian Canaan Dogs have had success in the ring internationally. Southalta's Gabriella, owned by Beverly Biren, was one of the two
"World Winners" of Canaan Dogs at the World Show in Mexico in 1978.
On May 21, 2006, Ha'Aretz Gimel Northern Confidence, "Cybelle", owned by Michelle Harrington and Larry Myers, at the age of 8-months-old, made Canadian history as the first Canaan Dog in Canada to take a Group placement. Under Canadian Judge Phyllis Wolfish in Ontario, and beautifully handled by Ward Bailey, Cybelle won fourth in the Working Group - there were 12 breeds that day representing the group.
On October 7, 2006,"Cybelle" again made Canadian history as the first Canaan bitch to earn a CKC Championship. Throughout her early show career, she earned Best Puppy in Working Group, a Group Third, and two Group fourths.
CKC CH Ha'Aretz Gimel Northern Confidence "Cybelle" and JK Maccabee Northern Warrior "Macc" both owned by Michelle Harrington and Larry Myers, became the first Canaan Dogs in Canada to earn performance titles in herding and rally-obedience trials.
